Ruth has served on over 20 boards and community committees in the Charlotte area including the YMCA, National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women, Little Sugar Creek Greenway, Catawba Lands Conservancy and Children's Theater. Recently, Ruth was recognized as one of the 2009's "50 Most Influential Women" in business, government, education and the not-for-profit fields by the Mecklenburg Times. Additionally, Ruth was named "Green Government Leader" by the Charlotte Business Journal in their inaugural "Green Awards." Click here to read the article about the award.
Member, National Board of Peacemaker Ministries : Founded in 1987, Peacemaker Ministries provides a full range of educational resources, seminars, and training to individuals and churches throughout the world so that prepare church leaders, adults, and children are equipped for the work of peacemaking. In addition, certified mediators provide conflict coaching, mediation, and arbitration services to resolve church and ministry disputes, lawsuits, family divisions, and business conflicts.

Vice Chair on both the Aging and Energy and Energy Efficiency Committees. Committee Member of the Appropriations and its Natural and Economic Resources sub-committee; Commerce, Small Business and Entrepreneurship; Education and its sub- committee on Universities; Environment and Natural Resources; Local Government II; and a newly formed Water Resources and Infrastructure Committee.
